How to Wheelie on a Cycle

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 31-08-2008

The Wheelie, so impressive, but yet so easy! (Editors note: that’s what you think!)
Well worth learning this one. It’s all about balance. From this you can master your rear wheel balance and then easily move onto tricks such as the backhop and the kickhop. Then from there the gap jump and the drop off. So listen up!
1. Ride along at a slow walking pace in a highish gear you feel comfy in.
2. Lean forward getting your bodyweight over your bars.
3. Use your wrong foot (the back foot when bunny hopping), and put in a half pedal stroke and sit down all in one movement.
Whatever you do, DON’T STOP PEDALING! This is where most people go wrong. If you stop you’re bound to loose your balance.

Blisters

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 31-08-2008

I got a couple of blisters on my left hand today. One of them opened up and hurts pretty much all the time. ouch. About a week ago we had some wind come through here, and it blew down a dead oak in the woods behind the house. That oak hit a witch hazel, and the witch hazel bent over and laid its crown on the trail I made earlier this year. The oak was too heavy for me to move. I thought about cutting the witch hazel to reopen the trail, but decided that since the oak was the one at fault here, I needed to do something about it and restore the hazel to its upright position. So I grabbed my axe and cut the oak in two. In this picture, you can see the witch hazel on the right.

A Blissfully Busy Weekend

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 31-08-2008

The keyboard has been silent.  It’s Labor Day weekend and many are enjoying their time camping, fishing, boating and the like for the season.  That’s something we never did manage to squeeze in this summer.  Our summer was spent locally and of course, in Denver since Simon’s birth.  The bulk of the warm season I remained confined to the couch, which was bed-rest central.
With germs finally coming to a rest, I’m anticipating seeing Simon this week.  Unfortunately I won’t be able to just stay and spend my time with our little guy each day.  This trip will have to be a short one, much to my dismay.  I definitely can’t picture not seeing Simon for two weeks.  I’m still feeling well enough (tonight at least!) to make the trip down.  Rob, on the other hand, is still feeling trapped under sniffle clouds.  Jaden seems to be doing much better, in [...]

Drawing…Something new to try

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 31-08-2008

While I was on vacation in Eastern Oregon last week, I brought along the latest issue of Cloth, Paper, Scissors.  This is a yummy issue and in particular I was drawn to Robin Olsen’s article, “Being Here, Sketching the Moment”.  You can see her sketches with watercolor washes on pages 70-73 in the Sept/Oct issue.  I liked her list of “essential sketch bag items” and realized that I had brought along all of them.
The scary part for me was to draw with an ink pen.  Yikes!  What if I made a mistake, you can’t erase it.  What if I hated what I drew?  What if it looked dorky?  Well, I brought along my gesso and could always cover it up and start over.  Everyone has to start somewhere, so here are my very first drawings.

This was a Liquitex Gel Matte Medium jar and my foam brush on a table.  The [...]

I am happy about you guys wanna keep up with me and my work, and I will do my best to make this here as easy understandable as possible.
I hope I can write everyday a bit when I am on tour, so to speak. but I may be tired like hell. And above all I hope there is internet. But well, Greece belongs to the EU and we are quite developed here.. haha. So why actually not.
Thank you so much for your comments!! Please go on with that..I will miss you very very much, but with every excursion I am a step closer to make a shitload of money and to buy a castle and an airplane *coughs*, so funny that I have to invest the same load of money into my excursions first to get there.. pfff. I would just have saved that up and never spent it on [...]

New Cycle Computer

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 31-08-2008

I mentioned last week that I got a new cycle computer, so I figured that I’d put up a couple of pictures and show how I installed it. This is not a fancy cycle computer, it is just an inexpensive one that I found for under $10, but it performs all the basic functions that I wanted, basically speed, distance, and trip time. It also has a clock, maximum speed, average speed, a trip odometer, and a lifetime odometer.
Installation is fairly straightforward, involving mounting the display on the handlebars, and then mounting the sensor on the fork and spokes.
The device uses a magnetic sensor on the forks that tracks a magnetic screw on the spokes. After installation you have to enter a calibration number from the instructions that tells the computer how big your wheels are, so that it can figure out how far the bike has traveled for [...]

Long Weekends Are Made for Riding

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 31-08-2008

This weekend has been a great weekend for rides.
First I went on the Saturday Morning Ride (a designated route that takes riders to Prout’s Neck through South Portland, Scarborough and Cape Elizabeth) with Shannon, the leader of the women’s ride out of Saco, along with other women who joined us. It was tons of fun, especially since I was feeling pretty strong and able to ride up front with a pretty strong rider who I recently met on the CCCP Monday Night Ride and the Tuesday Women’s Ride.

Then, I went on a nice ride with my husband and Tracey. It was a casual ride going over the same route as the previous day’s ride.

The weather was perfect and we saw oodles of other cyclists out also enjoying the day. However, the wind picked up a lot on our way back, or perhaps we were just riding more into it, [...]

First

First day of Spring, time to get on the rollers and get in shape for summer. Jess comes home from Sydney today.  First day my house doesn’t look like the house of a bike nerd.  First day of spring cleaning.
Gone to scour the streets.
